McGee Says EA Doesn't Want To Sequel The Series, Or Sell The Rights

American McGee, the mind behind the games American McGee's Alice and Alice: Madness Returns, which are versions with a completely different proposal from the well-known Alice in Wonderland, announced that Electronic Arts refused to continue with the continuation of the franchise, Alice: Asylum.

According to him, this is the end of the dream involving his version of Alice. On his Patreon, he said he had "exhausted all options for making a new Alice game" and that EA did not want to proceed with the sequel "based on internal reviews of intellectual property, market conditions, and proposed production details".

Furthermore, McGee stated that EA will retain the rights to the franchise and that it does not intend to sell or license the rights to the series.

"On the licensing issue, they responded that Alice is an important part of EA's overall game catalog, and selling or licensing her is not something they're prepared to do right now," explained McGee. “At this point, we've exhausted all options of making a new Alice game. With this response from EA, there is no way to move forward with the project.”

McGee had created a collective funding campaign on Patreon to follow with Alice: Asylum, a game that would continue Alice: Madness Returns, from 2011. After EA's response, the designer said he has no more alternatives or energy to try to bring the series back to return. He thanked the support of fans and those who participated in the project.

“I don't have any more ideas or energy left to try to get another Alice game. Nor am I interested in pursuing other game ideas within the current game development environment.

If anyone can convince EA to make Asylum, I want to clarify that, going forward, I have no desire to be involved with this or any other Alice project.”

On his Patreon, McGee made available Alice: Asylum's "design bible", with more than 400 pages, introducing the project. This design breakdown was used to submit the sequel to EA and is free to download.
