EA focuses on low-cost PCs to attract more players in Battlefield 6
Electronic Arts and Battlefield Studios are prioritizing the performance of Battlefield 6 on low-spec computers, a strategy aimed at reaching a larger audience. Technical director Christian Buhl confirmed that a "substantial number" of the millions of players in the open beta on PC were using hardware close to or below the minimum specifications.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Buhl said that the "min spec" (minimum specification) is one of the most important for the company, and that "it's super important from a commercial and business perspective - we want as many people as possible to play the game." He also mentioned that the development team worked hard to "optimize these maps for better performance."
EA's decision to focus on optimizing low-cost computers shows a commitment to the player base, which has been facing rising PC hardware prices and economic challenges. The focus on performance was a key factor in the success of the Battlefield 6 beta, which became the most popular in franchise history.
The success of the beta reinforces the idea that a well-optimized game is crucial for its success. Despite some players being unable to play due to Secure Boot requirements, the game's anti-cheat system managed to catch a significant portion of cheaters during testing.
EA's priority in optimizing Battlefield 6 for low-cost PCs is a welcome change in the gaming market. Do you think this strategy could inspire other developers to focus more on the accessibility of their games?
