EA confirms the end of Origin: Update to the EA App or update your PC
Electronic Arts (EA) announced that Origin, its digital distribution platform launched in 2011, will be officially discontinued on April 17, 2025. The decision is directly related to Microsoft's support for 32-bit systems, which has been discontinued in the latest versions of Windows 10. Users still running old systems will have to migrate to the EA App or upgrade their computers.
What You Need to Know:
- The EA App, the official replacement for Origin, was announced in 2020 and entered open beta in October 2022. It is only compatible with 64-bit systems.
- Players using 32-bit systems will not be able to access new games or continue using Origin.
- Data and games linked to Origin will be automatically transferred to the EA App, but EA warns that installed mods may not work correctly after migration.
"You will need a 64-bit operating system to play your games," said EA. And for those with outdated systems, the recommendation is clear: "You will need to use a newer computer."
Migration Requirements:
- Update your system to Windows 10 or higher in 64-bit.
- Download and install the EA App.
- Enable cloud saves to ensure the security of your data before transferring your library.
Although this change impacts a small group of users, it highlights the increasing pressure for hardware and software updates. For those still using old machines, such as 32-bit laptops, options become limited, excluding access to modern titles from EA.
This decision marks the end of an era for Origin, which has been widely criticized throughout its existence, but leaves behind a legacy that helped shape digital platforms.
And you, do you think the end of Origin is fair or do you feel that this is another way to pressure players to upgrade their systems?
