Druckmann confirms: cure was possible in The Last of Us

The controversy surrounding the ending of The Last of Us resurfaced after recent statements by Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and co-creator of the franchise universe. During his participation in the Sacred Symbols podcast, Druckmann made it clear that the narrative intention was always to show that the Fireflies did indeed have the ability to develop a cure from Ellie, ending years of debate among fans about the scientific veracity of this possibility.

"Could the Fireflies make a cure? Our intention is yes, they could. Now, our science is inconsistent and people are questioning it? Yes, it is inconsistent and now people are questioning it. I can't say anything. All I can say is that our intention is that they would have created a cure," Druckmann said.

The statement reinforces that the dilemma at the end of the game—when Joel prevents the surgery that could kill Ellie but save humanity—was designed to provoke deep ethical reflection, not to raise technical doubts about the Fireflies' medical protocols.

"This creates a much more interesting philosophical question about what Joel does," added the director.

Since its release in 2013, The Last of Us has been debated not only for its storyline, but for how it represents morality, sacrifice, and paternal love. The argument that the Fireflies would not have the technological or scientific capability to develop a cure has always been used by those who defend Joel's actions—an interpretation that now, according to Druckmann, is outside the intended scope of the original narrative.

In addition to the discussion about the cure, Druckmann also commented on the differences between the HBO series and the games. According to him, certain changes were inevitable due to the peculiarities of the television format and the pace of episode consumption, something that has generated divisions between purist fans and those who support creative adaptations.

"These are creative decisions made considering how long people would have to wait to see some scenes," he explained.

It is worth noting that the series had a strong audience and critical reception in 2023, with several award nominations and the confirmation of a second season, which will adapt the events of The Last of Us Part II, originally released in 2020. Production of the new season is underway, with a premiere scheduled for 2025.

Druckmann's statement recalls the original intention of the story and officially closes, at least, one of the most recurring discussions of the last decade among fans of the franchise. Nevertheless, it is unlikely to appease the deeper philosophical debate—and, as the creator himself indicated, that has always been the true focus of the narrative.
