Dreamcast will get a brand-new horror game after 25 years

Preserving legendary platforms by keeping their disc readers running through the indie scene is one of the industry's most commendable initiatives. Story Bird Studios has unveiled the production of White Creek, a survival horror piece that brings back the aesthetic of the 90s and runs directly on the original Sega Dreamcast hardware. The announcement stands out specifically because the legendary Sega device rarely gets attention in retro release waves, unlike other devices from the same generation.

To ensure no one misses out on the experience, the developers plan to make the title available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and also on Switch 2, in addition to the retro physical format.

The funding campaign on Kickstarter should be launched soon to make the production of Sega physical media feasible and to set official deadlines.

The setting takes place in the municipality of White Creek and puts the player in control of the exorcist Alicia Morelli. The style of camera and exploration takes direct inspiration from the early titles of the Resident Evil franchise, combining this gameplay with a dense atmosphere of psychological tension in the style of Silent Hill. To make the dynamic more interesting, the player will face constant moral dilemmas against local residents possessed by dark forces, having to choose between eliminating them with firearms or performing risky exorcisms to purify their souls.

Currently in the early stages of creation, the production does not yet have an exact release date set.

Offering mechanics with moral branching while honoring two historical franchises of the genre shows a precious care by the team. When the indie scene takes the risk of programming for old architectures while simultaneously catering to the modern audience, the video game culture is the real winner.
