Director of Final Fantasy 7 suggests interest in new franchise films
During an interview with content creator Danny Peña, veteran of Square Enix and director of the original Final Fantasy 7, Yoshinori Kitase revealed his personal desire to see more film adaptations in the game's universe.
"We don't have anything officially planned, so this is just a personal wish of mine, but yes, I have heard of several Hollywood directors and actors who play Final Fantasy 7, and many creators also respect the title," Kitase stated.
He added:
"I have heard things about creators who are very interested in the property, who love the universe of Final Fantasy 7. So, yes, personally, I would love to see something come out of these creators, in terms of a movie or some kind of visual piece."
The universe of Final Fantasy 7 has already been adapted to the cinema with the CGI movie Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, which explored events after the original game. The animation showed the consequences of Sephiroth's actions and a devastating disease that spread throughout Gaia.
With the expanded material presented in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, the game's universe offers numerous stories that could be explored in cinema. For example, the origin of the Turks, agents of the villain Shinra, was narrated in an obscure mobile game from 2004, which is now lost in time.
If Square Enix approves new audiovisual projects, there is a vast narrative ground to expand the franchise and explore its legacy in visual entertainment.
