Devolver Digital confirms heavy investment in Switch 2 after selling more than 9 million games in the current Nintendo generation
If there is a publisher that knows how to grab attention even outside the main stage of industry giants, it's Devolver Digital. And now, the irreverent indie publisher is fully focused on the future: Nintendo Switch 2. Not by chance - according to their most recent fiscal report, the original Nintendo Switch is, by far, the platform where Devolver has sold the most games, surpassing 9 million units sold since the console's launch on March 3, 2017.
This data alone would be enough to justify Devolver's strategic decision, but the report makes it clear that the publisher will not just continue with the same approach - they intend to intensify it. The Nintendo Switch 2, still planned for June 5, 2025, will be treated as a priority platform by the company, with a carefully selected line of titles to maximize appeal among Big N players.
The first three games from Devolver already confirmed for the new console generation are:
Starseeker
Human Fall Flat 2
Enter the Gungeon 2
These names already show the company's commitment to investing in franchises with established appeal - a central guideline highlighted in the report. Devolver identified that players tend to invest more easily in sequels or titles from familiar universes, which led to the decision to reduce the focus on new IPs and prioritize continuations.
“We want to give players more of what they already love. The plan is to invest in series with strong and engaged communities,” highlights a section of the document.
It's worth remembering that games like Enter the Gungeon, Katana ZERO, Loop Hero, My Friend Pedro, and GRIS were hugely successful on the Switch, contributing significantly to Devolver's brand identity within the console. And if the performance of the first generation is any indication, the sequel has everything to repeat - or exceed - that success.
Additionally, the report mentions that Nintendo Switch 2, with its new more powerful hardware and support for modern features like 4K, internal SSD, and CPU/GPU improvement, represents an opportunity to deliver more ambitious experiences within the "indie premium" aesthetic that characterizes Devolver.
With the market becoming increasingly competitive and a growing focus on hybrid platforms, the relationship between Devolver Digital and Nintendo seems stronger than ever - a partnership that started modestly, but has become one of the pillars of the publisher.
Now, it's up to the fans to wait for the next revelations, as Devolver promises more announcements during the second half of 2025, including other expected sequels and perhaps even surprise collaborations with Japanese independent studios.
If it depends on Devolver, Nintendo Switch 2 will not be lacking in personality, creativity, and, of course, that dose of stylized madness that only they know how to deliver.
