Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Breaks Records in Japan
The highly anticipated movie Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle (also known as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle), an adaptation of the final arc of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga, had a thunderous debut in Japan, breaking multiple box office records and challenging the reign of Mugen Train as the highest-grossing anime of all time.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which is the first of a trilogy of films that will conclude the series, has already established impressive milestones:
Biggest opening day in Japanese history: grossing 1.64 billion yen (equivalent to US$11.11 million).
Best single-day box office: reaching 2 billion yen (approximately US$13 million) on its third day.
Best opening weekend performance by a single film in Japan:
Three days: US$37 million (5.52 billion yen).
Four days: US$49 million (7.31 billion yen), boosted by a national holiday.
These numbers surpass the previous records held by Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which grossed 4.62 billion yen (US$43.8 million at the time) in its opening weekend in October 2020. ∗Mugen Train∗ became the highest-grossing anime film of all time, with over ∗∗US$500 million** globally, and also the highest-grossing film of 2020.
Fans around the world will have to wait a little longer to witness the final battle of Demon Slayer. A staggered release schedule has been announced, with the film arriving in theaters in the United States and United Kingdom on September 12, 2025.
It will be at this moment that we will have a clearer picture if Infinity Castle will be able to surpass the US$500 million mark of Mugen Train. Expectations are high, and the initial performance in Japan suggests that the record is seriously threatened.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle also kicks off a fall season filled with major anime releases, including the Chainsaw Man movie, the third season of Spy x Family (which has just received a new trailer), the third season of One-Punch Man, and the final season of My Hero Academia.
Considering the thunderous success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in Japan, do you believe the film has the potential to replicate this performance in the international market and truly surpass Mugen Train's historic milestone as the highest-grossing global anime?
