Studio downsizes team amid development of the franchise's most ambitious game

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed staff reductions while continuing the development of the next Tomb Raider. The news came directly from the company’s social media, revealing the layoff of 17 employees, citing the decision as part of a strategic realignment.

"Crystal Dynamics has made the difficult decision to reduce its team by 17 talented members. We did not take this decision lightly. In the end, this step was necessary to better align our current business needs with the studio’s future success. This does not reflect the dedication or capability of those affected."

Despite the impact of the decision, the company assured that ongoing projects, including the new Tomb Raider, will not be affected.

"We recognize how painful this outcome is for those impacted and are offering transition packages and support in finding new opportunities. Crystal Dynamics remains committed to pushing the boundaries in creating great games. This change does not alter our current project plans."

What Do We Know About the Next Tomb Raider?

The new Tomb Raider is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and is set to be the most expensive title in the franchise. The game will be single-player, focusing on Lara Croft’s narrative, staying true to the series’ roots while aiming to expand its scale and scope.

Although few details have been revealed, expectations are high, as this will be the first major entry in the franchise since Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018).

Another important factor is that Amazon Games will be publishing the title, marking a new partnership that could influence the series’ future.

Crystal Dynamics is Also Involved in Perfect Dark

In addition to the new Tomb Raider, the studio is also working as a support developer on Perfect Dark, a project led by The Initiative. This collaboration raises questions about the company’s resource allocation and whether it contributed to the need for staff cuts.

The layoffs in the middle of developing one of the studio’s most anticipated titles certainly concern fans. However, Crystal Dynamics reassures that it remains committed to delivering high-quality games. Now, we wait for more information about Lara Croft’s future and her triumphant return to gaming.
