Crimson Desert details specifications for Xbox consoles
Pearl Abyss has finally opened up about how its ambitious action RPG will behave on Microsoft's consoles. With the release just around the corner on March 19, Xbox Series X owners will have three paths to choose from, depending on how much they are willing to sacrifice sharpness for fluidity. The highlight is the Balanced Mode, which aims to reach 40 FPS using FSR 3 to stretch an internal resolution of just 1280p up to 4K. It's the kind of technical gymnastics that exposes the weight of the game, but at least offers an alternative for those with 120Hz screens who can't stand the slowness of 30 frames.
On the Xbox Series S, the situation is tighter, as expected for the "youngest" of the generation. The console will have two modes: one focused on Performance, running at a dismal 720p to deliver 40 FPS, and another on Quality, which goes up to 1080p but locks at 30 FPS. It's a bitter reminder that the optimization of dense open worlds remains the Achilles' heel of less powerful hardware, forcing resolutions reminiscent of the Xbox 360 era.
For those who demand the maximum visual fidelity on the Series X, the Quality Mode delivers Raytracing at its best and a base of 1440p scaled to 4K, but you will have to settle for 30 FPS. The Performance Mode sacrifices almost everything for speed, delivering over 60 FPS with VRR, but dropping the resolution to 1080p and keeping Raytracing to a minimum. This heavy dependence on image reconstruction technologies suggests that Pearl Abyss' graphics engine is a resource hog, which may result in a slightly blurry image in action-packed scenes.
"The new technical details help give a better idea of how the game will run on current generation consoles," the developers said when disclosing the metrics.
The promise of intense combat and cinematic storytelling in Crimson Desert sounds great on paper, but the real performance will dictate whether the immersion survives these technical concessions. Offering a 40 FPS mode is a smart move and shows that the studio is attentive to trends, although the low base resolution in all profiles leaves that doubt if the game didn't come out a bit too heavy for current consoles.
The countdown to March 19 has begun and performance spreadsheets are in place. It's reassuring to see technical clarity before purchase, allowing the player to decide whether they prefer to see every detail of the scenery in static form or prefer the agility of combat in low definition.
Pearl Abyss' strategy now is to ensure that the release takes place without the technical stumbles that often haunt vast open worlds.
