Creator of CoD and leader of Battlefield 6 blames EA for the existence of Call of Duty
Vince Zampella, one of the most influential figures in the FPS genre and currently the leader of the Battlefield franchise, made a strong statement about the origins of Call of Duty. Zampella, who worked on Medal of Honor, co-founded Infinity Ward and created Call of Duty, and later founded Respawn (responsible for Titanfall 2 and Star Wars Jedi), attributed the creation of his most successful series to a negative experience with Electronic Arts (EA).
In an interview with GQ, Zampella categorically stated that without his time at EA working on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Call of Duty might never have been created.
"The only reason that Call of Duty exists is because EA were dicks," said Zampella, who interestingly has been working for EA again since 2010, leading the Battlefield series.
Zampella's criticism of EA in the past is the most negative point of the news, exposing corporate tensions that shaped the shooters industry. After Allied Assault, several developers left the team to found Infinity Ward.
In contrast, Battlefield 6 is receiving a positive reception from fans, largely due to its approach of "back to basics," aiming to reach the peak of the series established by Battlefield 3, 4, and the Bad Company games.
Zampella recalled the cultural impact that Call of Duty had at its peak:
"When you're watching a random TV show like Family Guy or The Office, and they're talking about Call of Duty. That hits you, like, 'Oh shit!'" He added that "it was a little surreal."
