CEO of Take-Two: PC will dominate, but consoles will not disappear
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive (owner of Rockstar Games, producer of Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA 6), declared that the future of gaming will focus mainly on PC, although consoles will not disappear. The statement comes at a crucial moment when Microsoft and Valve are working to bring the PC to the living room.
In an interview with CNBC, Zelnick stated: “I think it's moving towards PC and the business is becoming more open rather than closed.”
Zelnick's opinion on the growth of PC is particularly relevant in the current context. Valve has already announced its new Steam Machine, a compact living room PC capable of running Steam games at up to 4K and up to 60fps on a big TV with a console controller. Furthermore, there have been recent speculations that the next Xbox from Microsoft will be a "living room PC" or hybrid.
Although the industry is moving towards the PC environment, Zelnick emphasized the longevity of the console experience, redefining it through the gaming experience: “But if you define a console as the property and not the system, then the notion of a very rich game that keeps you entertained for many hours playing on a big screen, that will never go away,” he said.
The CEO also mentioned that the mobile gaming market is growing faster than the console market, but it was the focus on PC that sparked more curiosity.
The CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Strauss Zelnick, stated to CNBC that gaming is "moving towards PC", with the business becoming "more open rather than closed". The statement coincides with the moves from Valve (new Steam Machine) and the speculations about the next Xbox being a living room PC. Zelnick believes that the console experience will not disappear, as the notion of "a very rich game [...] playing on a big screen" is timeless.
