CEO of Digital Extremes Defends Persistence in Live-Service Games

Steve Sinclair, CEO of Digital Extremes, the developer of Warframe, believes that studios give up on live-service games too early. In a recent interview with VGC, Sinclair criticized the trend of studios quickly abandoning games that fail to attract a solid player base early on. According to him, many believe that the launch is decisive, but it is only the beginning.

Sinclair notes that it is a waste to discard games after years of system development and building initial communities. "They think that the launch is all or nothing, and it's not," Sinclair says. "They have a financial way to be persistent, but they never do it. The game is launched, it doesn't work, and they throw it away."

He emphasizes that high operating costs often scare developers, leading them to abandon promising projects when they see a drop in numbers. "We've seen this with incredible releases that I think have huge potential, and I think they give up too soon."

For example, Warframe is a success story of constant growth over the years. Last week, Digital Extremes revealed a gameplay demo for their next major update, Warframe 1999. Additionally, they showcased new gameplay footage for their upcoming title, Soulframe, which will have an open beta soon.

Still, Sinclair acknowledges that there are cases where persistence can be unfair. Games like Redfall from Arkane Austin were pressured to become live-service, despite the studio being known for single-player titles. In contrast, games like No Man's Sky and Sea of Thieves have grown significantly thanks to consistent updates.

The discussion about the longevity of live-service games continues, but Sinclair advocates the idea that persistence can lead to long-term success, as long as studios have the courage to face initial challenges and continue to invest in their games.
