Bungie tries to fix Marathon's punitive balance
Bungie has finally released patch 1.0.0.4 for Marathon, focusing on one of the points that had been irritating the community the most: the absurd resistance of UESC enemies. Playing alone was becoming a thankless task, as the robots seemed to be bullet sponges, draining resources disproportionately. With the new update, the life of most of these opponents and the shields of the bosses were reduced, an attempt to make raids less frustrating for those who are not in a full squad.
The change in reputation system with CyberAcme is a fair nod to those who play in groups, as now teams receive the same bonus as solo players when extracting with the character Rook. It is a necessary adjustment, although it seems like something that should have been balanced from day one, showing that the initial design may have been heavy-handed on difficulty to mask the lack of content in certain areas.
"We hope to alleviate the resource consumption in solo or team matches when facing UESC. The idea is that ammunition and medical kits last longer without removing the threat of enemies." - official statement from the developer.
Not everything is easy, as the patch also tinkered with loot. Now, the WSTR shotgun that appears with Rook comes in the "compromised" condition. This forces the player to find a Matter Fixative if they want to successfully extract the weapon, adding a layer of bureaucracy to progression that may not please everyone. It is worth noting that enemies from special contracts still have the old difficulty, keeping the challenge intact where it supposedly should be greater.
This movement from Bungie shows that they are attentive to feedback, but also reveals a certain insecurity about how to keep players engaged without making the experience tedious. Adjusting NPC life is a start, but the true test will be to see if Marathon's gameplay sustains long-term interest without relying solely on smaller numbers in health bars.
