Borderlands Movie Flops, but Gearbox CEO Teases Borderlands 4 Amid $100M Disaster

The much-anticipated Borderlands movie has fallen flat, with early reactions labeling it a "disaster" and "uninspired." Despite a slight recovery from its initial 0% Rotten Tomatoes score to a still-mediocre 50% audience rating, the film’s reception has been far from stellar. However, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford isn't letting the cinematic flop dampen spirits, instead shifting the conversation toward the future of the franchise, dropping strong hints about the development of Borderlands 4.

Pitchford, who co-founded Gearbox Software, took to Twitter to address the lukewarm reception of the film, expressing gratitude that fans still prefer the video games over the movie adaptation. "So what you're saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of filmmakers on the planet have done," he tweeted. "I'm super flattered! We're working extra hard four you on what's next…"

The not-so-subtle use of "four" has fans buzzing, and while it's not a huge surprise—Take-Two Interactive had already hinted at a new installment back in March—it's the first time Pitchford has alluded to Borderlands 4 so directly. Take-Two, which acquired Gearbox for $460 million, confirmed in a press release that "the next installment in the series" was already in "active development," and it seems things are moving full steam ahead.

Despite the disastrous reception of the Borderlands movie, which reportedly had a budget of over $100 million, Gearbox's focus appears firmly on the future. While there’s no trailer or official details for the next Borderlands game yet, fans are eagerly awaiting what Gearbox has in store, hoping that the next chapter in the Borderlands saga will be a return to form.

As the film's box office performance continues to disappoint, all eyes are now on Gearbox to deliver a game that will reignite the passion of the Borderlands community. With Pitchford’s tease, it seems we might not have to wait too long to see what’s next.
