Battle.net may host third-party games, report suggests
Opening the doors of a closed ecosystem to host productions from other studios is a bold move by Microsoft, which seems inclined to transform Battle.net into a comprehensive store on PC. According to a report published by Windows Central and authored by journalist Jez Corden, the owner of Xbox and Blizzard are discussing allowing external developers and publishers to launch their titles within the platform, shifting the client from an exclusive launcher role to compete directly for the attention of the computer market.
The gradual migration of titles from Xbox Game Studios to the app — as with launches like Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, and DOOM: The Dark Ages — served as a practical test of reception among the community.
The plan aims to curb the exodus of players during the off-season for titles like Diablo IV and Overwatch 2, preventing users from switching to competing ecosystems such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and Riot Client.
This movement connects with deals made with partners like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts, integrating their respective executables with the Xbox environment and enabling cross-purchase bridges between consoles and PC.
However, the initiative still faces some annoying operational hurdles:
Diablo IV still lacks full support for the Xbox Play Anywhere feature, while various projects from Ubisoft do not yet natively sync achievements with the player profile.
All of this restructuring under CEO Asha Sharma joins the arrival of the Xbox Ally portable line and the expansion of backward compatibility on Windows.
Betting on the weight of a software traditionally focused on Blizzard brands to compete with established storefronts brings a breath of healthy competition to the computer ecosystem. If the company manages to solve the synchronization issues and provide a truly unified environment for users, the strategy has the potential to consolidate its presence in an extremely fragmented segment.
