Bad debut? Dauntless arrives with negative reviews on Steam!

The rival of Monster Hunter, Dauntless, made by Epic Games, Inc. then arrived on Steam, after 5 years it arrived on Steam, along with an update that did not please the new players at all, leaving the game's reviews very low, listed as “extremely negative”, based on over 500 user reviews!

The Awakening update revamped what the game used to be, with only 15% of reviewers leaving with something positive to write about. Dauntless previously loosely followed the Monster Hunter formula, where you would enter a map full of creatures, maybe with some cooperative friends, and then use their remains to create new weapons and armor. The Awakening update completely eliminated weapon crafting, essentially excluding over 200 weapons in favor of about 18 pillars.

Phoenix Labs' explanation for the change makes sense on paper, although the implementation was not very well received: "In the past, weapons basically operated the same way within each category," wrote in a recent blog post. "A Hammer would play like a Hammer, etc. etc. And then, aside from Exotics, different 'weapons' would really be more like different skins." Awakening, instead, gives you a few weapons per category (hammer, axe, sword, etc), but some seem to have been temporarily locked behind controversial battle passes until eventually becoming craftable with a different in-game currency.

The negative reviews are full of complaints about changes in how weapons work (or don't work), but arguments against the new loot boxes, gutted progression, and convoluted systems are equally persistent. "Where did all the content go?", one review asked. "As a veteran slayer, I was excited to see it make a 'return', if you want to call it that. With this new update, I basically wasted the hundreds of hours I spent grinding to get my loadouts back on Epic Games", said another.

"This is definitely a change," acknowledged Phoenix Labs on social media. "We want to clarify that Alluring Moons is the only weapon you have to pay for, other weapons can still be earned for free by earning weapon tokens. Over time, even Alluring Moons will become available for free."
