Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora receives PSSR support
A Massive Entertainment has released a robust update for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, finally trying to polish the edges of a title that took a while to find its rhythm in the market. The main attraction of patch 1.020 is the official support for PSSR on PS5 Pro, allowing owners of Sony's new hardware to activate the "Enhanced PSSR Image Quality" option in the system settings. It is a valid attempt to give visual longevity to the game, especially now that interest in the franchise has been reignited by the cinematic debut of Fire and Ash. However, it is impossible not to notice that these technical improvements come at a time when the game struggles to remain relevant after a lukewarm release in 2023, serving almost as a digital "makeup" to try to erase the impression of an open world that, although beautiful, often lacks depth.
The patch also addresses chronic issues that irritated the community, such as the infamous infinite loading screens that seemed to ignore the speed of the SSD on the PlayStation 5. In addition, the studio included improvements to XeSS FG and specific adjustments in animations and interface. By the end of 2025, the addition of the New Game Plus mode and the third-person camera had already tried to fix the experience, but the feeling is that Ubisoft is playing catch-up to take advantage of the movie's success wave. This dependency on external factors to make the game "explode" shows that the title may not have had enough legs on its own on launch day, requiring constant updates to reach the state it should have presented from the beginning.
Check out the full patch notes for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora version 1.020 below:
- Fixed various issues of "infinite loading screen".
- World and terrain fixes.
- Improvements in XeSS FG.
- Several minor fixes (interface and animations).
- PS5 Pro players - enable "Enhance PSSR Image Quality" (in "Screen and Video") on the console when playing with PSSR.
The journey through Pandora now seems more stable technically, but the insistence on terrain and world fixes months after the debut indicates that the original polishing was far from ideal. If you are a graphic fidelity enthusiast and own a PS5 Pro, this is the opportunity to see the bioluminescent forests with superior clarity, although the basic gameplay remains the same as always. The effort of Massive Entertainment to maintain support is positive for fans, but serves as a warning about how the industry has become dependent on post-launch patches to achieve the promised quality standard in trailers.
