Activision issues warning about fake alerts in Black Ops 2
Ensuring the upkeep and safety of titles released years ago without abandoning the player base that remains active on servers is vital for preserving successful franchises. Activision issued a notice to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 users informing them that a recent update focused on network infrastructure might cause temporary ban warnings to appear on the screen, even for accounts without any infraction history.
The warning arises from data updates and synchronization adjustments on the servers.
The unsettling message is linked to legacy systems maintained in older Call of Duty games.
If you receive the warning and get disconnected from a match, Activision suggests a straightforward solution: if you can reconnect without issues shortly afterward, no penalty has been applied. However, being unable to return to the lobbies indicates that a legitimate penalty has been processed.
In addition, the security update specifically targets profiles using hacks to manipulate the Prestige level — a chronic cheat that affected Black Ops 2 by forcing maximum level or erasing weapon and gear progress from others during modified matches.
Previously, the title also received fixes aimed at PS4 and PS5. The patch reduced command response time on 120 Hz monitors and adjusted hosting in Zombies mode to favor PS5 consoles.
Fixing severe issues on old servers without harming the experience of honest players requires keen quality control, something the publisher often struggles with when dealing with legacy code. Nevertheless, seeing a major company invest resources to hunt cheaters and stabilize the infrastructure of a classic is great news for those still enjoying online matches.
