Marketplace definitively closed, but you can still play your favorite games
Xbox 360 console owners have received important news regarding the closure of the Xbox 360 Marketplace, the console's online store. Microsoft has announced that Marketplace operations will cease on July 29, 2024.
This means that starting from this date, Xbox 360 owners will no longer be able to purchase new games or entertainment content through the online platform. Additionally, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will also cease to function.
Despite the impact this change may have for users, it's important to emphasize that players will still be able to enjoy digitally purchased games, both those bought online and those from physical discs.
Microsoft assures that this change will not affect the ability to play Xbox 360 games or previously purchased additional content (DLC). These games will be available to play not only on the Xbox 360 itself but also on the company's more recent consoles such as Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, thanks to the retrocompatibility feature.
Another piece of good news is that multiplayer games and cloud saves will not be impacted by the Marketplace closure. Players will still be able to enjoy online matches and access their cloud-saved progress as usual.
Xbox 360 games on the new console generation will be enhanced with features like "FPS Boost," "Auto HDR," and faster loading times.
However, the change will significantly affect the ability to stream movies and TV shows on the Xbox 360. After July 29, 2024, the Microsoft Movies & TV app will no longer be functional on this console.
While content purchased through the app will remain in users' libraries, it will only be viewable on devices such as PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It's worth noting that playing movies and TV shows from DVDs will continue to be available on the Xbox 360, as this process doesn't require additional software.
This change clarifies a previous Microsoft statement released in February, which inaccurately indicated that the closure of the Xbox 360 Marketplace would occur the following year. It is now confirmed that the closure is scheduled for July 2024.
Players who wish to acquire Xbox 360 games or DLCs are advised to do so by that date.
