Sega CEO Haruki Satomi announced at TGS 2020, at the Sega Fan Meet-up 2020, a new project titled Virtua Fighter x Esports Project. A teaser trailer was published and can be found below.

On the reveal tweet, Sega mentions the Virtua Fighter series is coming back for the 60th anniversary of the company, meaning the “Virtua Fighter X Esports Project” will include at least a brand new Virtua Fighter game. Additional details will be coming at a later date.

The tweet reads: “The legendary fighting game series is finally back with Esports! Virtua Fighter X Esports Project was announced!!

The first 3D fighting game series, started in 1993, is getting restarted to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sega! Look forward to additional information coming at a later date!”.

Virtua Fighter, like the other Virtua games from Sega, were all initially directed by Yu Suzuki, who later used all this knowledge to make Shenmue.

I’m sure you already know Shenmue was initially titled “Virtua Fighter RPG” as well. The last Virtua Fighter game was Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown  released in 2010.

The game is also playable is some Yakuza games. Some tournaments for the game still regularly happened in Japan, at least before Covid-19. It’s particularly nice to see Sega is really bringing back all of its iconic series these past few years.
