Valve announced Wednesday morning (22) that Counter-Strike 2 what will launch in mid-2023, promising a complete overhaul of every system, content and gameplay experience. The announcement was accompanied by three videos showing the new game in action, including updated maps, dynamic smoke grenades, and subtick updates for more accurate servers.

Select Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players can begin testing the game from this moment, with Valve releasing a FAQ on limited testing and how to participate. The new game will useValve's Source 2 engine and promises to be the biggest technical leap in Counter-Strike history with visual overhauls of the game's classic maps.

Smoke grenades will also receive a major overhaul with dynamic volumetric objects that interact with the environment and react to lighting, gunfire and explosions. In addition, the game features sub-tick updates to make movement and gunfire responsive regardless of tick rate.

Counter-Strike 2 will be the fourth major release in Valve's first-person shooter series, following the original 2000 game, 2004's Counter-Strike: Source and 2012's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.
