Todd Howard Appreciates How Excited People are About Starfield Despite Having Seen Nothing

Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda this week, Pete Hines, Todd Howard, and Phil Spencer made a collective appearance on this week’s edition of the Xbox Podcast to talk more about what the deal means for all parties moving forward.

In the process, Bethesda Game Studios’ Howard gave us an “update” on the developer’s next project, Starfield.

A little over halfway into the podcast, which you can find below, Xbox’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, who hosted the panel, point-blank asked Howard about what’s up with Starfield.

Howard jokingly responded saying, “I think it’s getting really good hype for a game no one has seen.” After a brief chuckle from the panel, Howard went on to say that folks at Microsoft have obviously seen some things related to the game and that he remains quite excited to show more of it in action down the road.

“I will say that it’s a really exciting project that we’ve been doing for a long time,” Howard went on to say about Starfield.

“Once we got on the new systems, the things we found we could do — and so it’s a major engine rewrite on that game. People who know me know I like to wait as long as possible to show stuff — so we’re closer to showing it than we were at the beginning of this conversation.

I think it’s going to be something really, really special and we’re excited to work with Xbox on that.”

Howard stated earlier this week in an additional blog post that the engine Starfield is being built within is the biggest overhaul that Bethesda Game Studios has conducted since The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. As such, this is likely one major reason why we haven’t seen anything about the game just yet.

Then again, as Howard alluded to, Bethesda Game Studios does seem to enjoy keeping a tight lid on their projects until release is near.

Both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, the two most recent titles from the developer, weren’t fully revealed until their respective E3 showcases mere months before each game ended up hitting store shelves.

With this in mind, it sounds like Starfield won’t be shown to the public until its release is right around the corner.

Given how long Howard says the game has been in the works though, hey, maybe a 2021 launch isn’t out of the question.
