Tim Sweeney sees Roblox as a threat and points to a crisis in AAA games
The executive made a point of shining a spotlight on the success of others by naming Roblox. In his view, ecosystems focused on providing tools for users to create their own content can consolidate the audience, creators, and money into a single structure. The issue with this model, as pointed out by the Epic leader, is the emergence of a kind of modern monopoly where a single company dictates the rules, retains most of the revenue, and manages hundreds of millions of users. It is almost ironic to see a major player in the market complaining about profit centralization, given the history of fees and exclusivities that large digital stores strive to enforce at all costs on PCs.
During his presentation at the State of Unreal event, the CEO of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, spoke out about the drastic changes that advances in social media and interactive virtual environments are causing in the industry. According to the executive, major traditional studios have lost their footing because conventional game commerce models no longer provide the same returns as before.
Sweeney was unequivocal in describing the current financial landscape of blockbusters trying to survive in the console and PC market: "We are often seeing hundreds of millions of dollars in development costs, followed by tens of millions of dollars in revenue." It is a harsh reality that shatters the old corporate logic that investing more money automatically translates to higher profits, resulting in bloated projects that lead to colossal losses for companies.
The changing behavior of younger audiences dictates the pace of this new market dynamic. The executive explained that the new generation of consumers no longer seeks a specific game in isolation, but prefers to virtually gather with friends before deciding on which environment or map to explore together. This preference highlights why games strictly focused on single-player campaigns struggle to maintain continuous engagement compared to established social platforms that already have an active community.
To try to curb the advance of rival brands and retain players' attention, the company behind the graphics engine plans to use the upcoming Unreal Engine 6 as a form of technical salvation, allowing complete integration of items and connectivity between different titles. This fixation on turning everything into one large shared metaverse focused on persistent microtransactions might please investors, but it overlooks the fact that many players still value complete and well-structured experiences, without the need for external interferences from other brands.
