There's 'No Comparison' Between The Last of Us on PS5 vs PS3, Says Dev
Leak had wrong lighting and HDR.
A Naughty Dog developer has argued there's "no comparison" between the gameplay of The Last of Us: Part I remake on PS5 when compared to the PS3 original. Senior environment texture artist Jonathon Benainous said that "having played both, there is no comparison between PS3 & PS5" in response to a fan questioning whether the remake's gameplay will be close to that of The Last of Us: Part II.
Benainous points out that criticism pointed towards the lack of gameplay evolution is from fans who haven't "actually had their hand on the controller", suggesting the new PS5 version does feel different when you compare it to the 2013 title. Furthermore, he explains that adding the prone mechanic to The Last of Us: Part I would have essentially broken the flow of combat since environments weren't built around it.
People complain about gameplay by watching a video but nobody actually had their hand on the controller. Having played both, there is no comparison between PS3 & PS5.

And the prone, would have simply broken the gameplay and the combat space as it wasn't built this way originally.
In a separate tweet, the senior environment texture artist says it was difficult to see the gameplay leaks happen before Naughty Dog was ready to show the game, especially since the footage "leaked in low rez, with a messed up color grading and no HDR". Since gameplay was posted online from external sources, the Uncharted developer posted an official look at the game with an extended deep dive that seemed to sway some opinions more positively.
The post is another in a line of tweets from current and former employees who have worked on the remake at some point or another, with animator Robert Morrison — who now works at Sony Bend — arguing against the claims The Last of Us: Part I is a "cash grab". In response, he said: "Actually it’s the most meticulously built and crafted project that I have ever seen or been a part of in my entire career. The highest level of care and attention to detail possible."
