Chasing a rabbit through the basement, only to accidentally dive through the wall, was a revelation. And it’s that secret element — and the sense of awe and novelty it inspires — that forms the basis for the fabulous new Mario 64 Lego set, the Question Mark Block.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>The Question Mark Block set has 2064 (how could they not?) pieces and features several vignettes from some of \u003Cem>Mario 64\u003C\u002Fem>’s iconic levels. There’s a tiny Bowser, a tiny Mario, and two of those god damned penguins. But the trick is that none of these vignettes are visible before the block “transforms.” That’s right, this Lego Mario 64 set is secretly a transformer.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>In its completed form, the block looks like a smooth, yellow box with typical Lego ridges on the white question marks. But with a light tug on one side of the cube, the top flips out and the diorama unfolds. The block now acts as a stand for vignettes of different levels. Peach’s Castle sits atop Lethal Lava Land, complete with the big, horned Bully. And on the sides, there’s Bob-omb Battlefield and Cool, Cool Mountain.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>\u003Cimg src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.vox-cdn.com\u002Fuploads\u002Fchorus_asset\u002Ffile\u002F22980521\u002FImage_from_iOS__17_.jpg\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Each of the dioramas features numerous Easter eggs — some hidden inside the castle structure itself — but they’re not the set’s only secrets. The exterior of the block also features a small hatch, completely invisible unless you know where to pull. By lifting the hatch, you’ll see a tiny Lego Bowser staring back at you. If you press down on him, a lever activates and a bottom piece on the set unlocks, flipping down and creating a small platform.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>The platform houses a turntable that you can hook Bowser’s tail to. If you attach your tiny Mario to the turntable, you can spin King Koopa around and around, shouting, “So long, gay Bowser!” to yourself for hours. Or you could just attach Princess Peach so she can finally get the revenge she’s owed.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>The Mario 64 Question Mark block is a complicated build with a ton of different pieces, but like many Lego sets, it’s seamless once you’ve built it. And it’s that seamlessness that preserves the many secrets within. If you were to simply show someone the block and tell them how many hours you’d spent building it, they’d probably begin to question how you spend your time. But like a piece of candy, the shell is just there to make it look pretty — everything you want is inside.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Super Mario\u003C\u002Fem>\u003Cem> 64\u003C\u002Fem> is rather simple if you never venture off of Nintendo’s specific star path. But to get all 120 stars, you have to think outside the box, get every coin, and stare into the sun. As a static toy, the Lego Question Mark Block takes \u003Cem>Mario 64\u003C\u002Fem>’s philosophy and emulates the video game about as well as an inflexible piece of plastic can. That’s why I loved putting this Lego set together.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>To the incurious, the Lego Question Mark Block is just a big hunk of plastic. Last week, we reported on a stunning collection of online scans from the 1996 Super Mario 64 guide; a true relic that would likely cost a hefty sum if you wanted a physical copy today.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Thanks to an update from Kotaku, we can now report that the scans have now been taken offline after a copyright strike from Nintendo of America, which Internet Archive passed onto the original uploader, Comfort Food Video Games.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\nBefore we give our own opinion on this, here's a quote from the uploader courtesy of Kotaku:\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cblockquote>\r\n\u003Cp>\"Sadly archive.org sent me their usual takedown notice email telling me Nintendo of America challenged the copyright of the scan and it was removed. Frankly I’d love to challenge the legitimacy of that and how Nintendo of America would have anything to do with a Nintendo of Japan licensed Gem Books guide from 1995 but I can’t really fight the Nintendo legal team here. It’s incredibly disappointing.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>While I fully understand protecting one’s IP and copyrights I didn’t think I was hurting anyone by scanning and uploading a 27 year old guide that is extremely out of print. Truthfully I think it helps Nintendo while only hurting the people selling this guide for literal hundreds of dollars. In fact they’re actively hindering the cause.\"\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>This is obviously a disappointing turn of events, although not especially surprising if you're familiar with Nintendo's previous takedowns. On the one hand, of course, the guide remains Nintendo's copyright and it has every right to defend it, but let's be honest here, it's been out of production for \u003Cem>years\u003C\u002Fem> at this point. The likelihood of Nintendo reissuing such a product - particularly outside of Japan - is incredibly slim when you consider the number of times Super Mario 64 has already been released on various platforms; we daresay it's missed its chance.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>On a more positive note, we'd wager that the cat is now out of the bag. With something like a collection of online scans, you can bet that this thing is already in circulation outside of the Internet Archive. Let us know.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Chr \u002F>\r\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Original Story [Tue 15th Mar, 2022 14:30 GMT]\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Proper game guides really feel like a thing of the past now, with online walkthroughs and YouTube guides being a far more convenient, if a bit sterile, alternative.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>One of the best examples of a game guide done right is the original 1996 Japanese guide for Super Mario 64, complete with commentary from the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto and a set of \u003Cem>gorgeous\u003C\u002Fem> dioramas based on the game's levels.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>The guide is fairly difficult to get hold of these days, and you'd be looking at parting with a decent wad of cash to bag one on eBay. Thankfully, all 152 pages have now been scanned online in HD, so everyone can view and appreciate the incredible work that's gone into it. Granted, the whole thing is in Japanese, but we'd wager most readers know Super Mario 64 inside and out by now.\u003Cbr \u002F>\r\n \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Here's a sample of the delights held This beats the previous record for a single video game auction, which was held by an ultra-rare copy of The Legend Zelda and was set just a few days ago. That rare game sold for an impressive sale price of $870,000 on July 9.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>Auctioned off through popular auction house Heritage Auctions, this copy of Super Mario 64 was given a 9.8 rating on the Wata Scale. As a result of this high rating, Heritage Auctions says it just one of fewer than five known sealed copies in such incredible condition. The auction started on July 9 and ended today, on July 11. Even before the auction had started, this copy of Mario 64 was making headlines with its $100k starting price.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>After selling for 1.5 million today, this new record for a single video game auction beats out the just set record of $870k. Before that, the record was held by an NES copy of Super Mario Bros that sold for $660k in April of this year. The new record of $1.5 million is more than double that old record set in April and is nearly double the more recent $870k record.\u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp> \u003C\u002Fp>\r\n\r\n\u003Cp>All this money being spent on old video games makes me feel a bit sick. I can only imagine what even a fraction of all this cash could do to help so many people around the world. But folks like to hide their assets and wealth in strange ways, I get it.
