The Sims 4 Base Game Update to Improve Skin Tones and Hairstyles, Arriving October 6

Earlier this year, during EA Play Live 2020, at around the 9-minute mark, a segment for The Sims 4 appeared in which Lyndsay Pearson, General Manager for the game spoke, with Black Lives Matter in mind, about representation and diversity that surrounds The Sims.

This was followed by members of the community sharing their stories. Now, EA has detailed an upcoming update that will address skin tone improvements as well as new content.

In a letter back at the start of September 2020, EA explained how it would be addressing community feedback.

One of those was “adding significantly more skin tones before the end of the year,” as well as being “committed to continuing to expand representation”.

This week, EA published another post on September 23 explaining its plans for The Sims 4. The upcoming update will be arriving on October 6 for PC and Mac, and November 10 for consoles.

It’ll be available as a base game update and looks to be “improving the blotchy artifacts and ashy appearance of darker skin tones on mid and high spec machines.

” Additionally, in October, the game will also see updates to two of the base game hairstyles as a way to “improve the representation of hairstyles in our base game”.

It’s said that “at this point” the updates applied in October will only be visible to those running “Uncompressed Sim Textures” graphics settings.

The blog post also states that in December, there will be “at least” a hundred new skin tone swatches being added to The Sims 4 in “cool, neutral, and warm tones with a particular emphasis on darker skin tones.

” These will come with a slider on all available swatches to modify them to the players liking. Sliders are also going to be applied to makeup in the Create-A-Sim mode.

The December update will also feature another 2 improved base game hairstyles.

More information is said to be on the way sometime in late October or early November, and EA details that it is working with diverse community members “to make sure we get this right.”
