The Dream Is Dead: PS5 Will Not Play PS3, PS2, or PS1 Games

Sony confirms.

We’ve known all along that the PlayStation 5 won’t play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games – but apparently some needed it spelling out for them. So here we go: the PS5 won’t play PS3, PS2, and PS1 games. Confirmation comes courtesy of an interview with Sony chief Jim Ryan that was conducted by Japanese game bible Famitsu. Asked directly about legacy backwards compatibility, the executive reiterated that the company’s next-gen console will play 99 per cent of PS4 titles, but it “couldn’t reach the implementation” of backwards compatibility for its older home consoles.

Presumably, the PS2 Classics that were ported to PS4 will run, as will remasters like PaRappa the Rapper, you just won't be able to dust off your PS2 collection from the attic and play it on your PS5. Which, frankly, isn’t all that surprising really, is it? After all, Ubisoft told us weeks ago.
