Tawna is The Final New Playable Character in Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time

Tawna is returning to the Crash franchise, and this time she's no damsel in distress

At some point in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, Crash had a relationship with another bandicoot named Tawna. She would always take a back seat in the games, being some damsel in distress, but Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is looking to change that up.

Tawna is making a return, with a new look and role to play. Revealed as the final playable character in the upcoming Crash Bandicoot title, alongside Neo Cortex and Dingodile, the Tawna that players encounter won’t be the same helpless Bandicoot from other games.

This version of Tawna is from an alternate dimension, one that, judging by her new style, has a lot more punk rock influences. In her trailer, it’s revealed that she won’t exactly be joining team Crash, but she’ll help out whenever she can.

Playing as Tawna in Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time will be another departure from classic Crash gameplay. Instead of spinning Tawna kicks enemies and boxes out of the way – admittedly not all that different. The real changes come from her Hookshot (which she’s apparently borrowing from Link), and the unique ability to wall jump. That last one is pretty self-explanatory, but the Hookshot is much more interesting. Using it, Tawna can smash distant crates, attack enemies or even grapple herself over gaps.

Lou Studdert, one of the developers working on Crash 4, said during the reveal of Tawna in an episode of PlayStation Underground, that her most unique trait would be movement. “For her, it’s all about quick traversal,” said Studdert, “and combing these different maneuvers together. Going from a rope swing to a hook shot, to a rail grind to a wall jump, she’s all about being fast and nimble in ways that other characters aren’t.”

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is set to release on Ps4 and Xbox One on October 2, 2020.
