Starbreeze has released a new teaser trailer for PAYDAY 3, the long-awaited third game in the cooperative first-person shooter series.
The teaser trailer doesn't reveal much beyond confirming that fans will get their first look at the game via a gameplay trailer due out this summer. While the exact release date for the trailer has not been confirmed, it is speculated that it will coincide with Summer Game Fest or Gamescom.
PAYDAY 3 was originally announced in May 2016, but its development was affected by Starbreeze's financial problems. The Swedish game company had hoped to release the game in 2022 or 2023, as stated in its 2019 year-end report.
Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren confirmed in the Q1 2023 financial report that the marketing campaign for the game will ramp up this summer and the developers are dropping hints and clues on PAYDAY 3 to tease fans.
Koch Media (now folded into Embracer Group subsidiary Playion) will publish PAYDAY 3, with an expected investment of over €50 million. There are few details about the game itself, other than a few hints shared during the franchise's 10th anniversary.
We know that the game will take place in a "huge" version of New York City, the Big Apple, and the story will take place many years after the events of PAYDAY 2, when the crew abandoned their life of crime. It will be interesting to see how they get back into the heist business.
Starbreeze also teased that the digital age will feature prominently in PAYDAY 3, with mass surveillance and the Dark Web playing a role in the tools available to players. The media is said to cover the crew's exploits in the game, although it's unclear what that will entail. Finally, the four original PAYDAY characters (Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf) are expected to return for this new game.
While PAYDAY 3 is at the heart of Starbreeze's strategy, the Swedish gaming company is also developing other unannounced games with release dates set for 2025 and 2027 respectively.
