Spielberg dominates worldwide box offices with science fiction
The film industry received a fresh boost with the debut of Revelation Day, the latest science fiction project led by Steven Spielberg and starring Emily Blunt. The production quickly climbed to the top of the charts in most of the 73 countries where it was released, amassing 93 million dollars globally in its first days on screen. The performance in the national territory was surprisingly positive, recording approximately 3 million dollars at the box office. This achievement establishes the film as the best debut in history for the filmmaker in Brazil, proving that local audiences preferred to swap the couch and World Cup sports broadcasts for dark movie theaters, a rare feat that attests to the director's magnetism in delivering plots that justify the ticket price.
While Steven Spielberg's release leads the current circuit, the overall picture for 2026 shows other significant moves at the box office. The production Obsession: Happiness is Relative expanded its total earnings to 286 million dollars, securing the spot as the most financially successful release in Focus Features' history. On the other hand, the biopic Michael, distributed by Lionsgate, started losing traction in cinemas, although it still added 21 million dollars to reach a cumulative amount of 932 million dollars. This figure secures the film the silver medal among Hollywood's highest-grossing films of the year.
The absolute leader of the year remains under the control of Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie, which has established itself as the only film work of 2026 to break the historic 1 billion dollar mark so far. This is a clear indication that the traditional film industry continues to rely on established brands from video games to massively enhance their financial statements.
The list of Hollywood productions that managed to surpass the 500 million dollars mark this year remains limited. Besides the space adventures of Nintendo's plumber and the pop king biopic, only Project Hail Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2 have broken this barrier.
This scarcity of original mega-hits highlights a severe creative crisis in major studios, which seem unable to engage the masses without resorting to late sequels or safe literary adaptations. There is a great expectation that this scenario will change as of June 18, the date on which the partnership between Disney and Pixar will bring Toy Story 5 to cinemas. The market views the animation as the main candidate to rival Mario's astounding numbers.
Racing on the sidelines of the rest of the exhibition circuit, Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu elevated its earnings to 315 million dollars, the thriller Backrooms, under the A24 brand, surpassed the respectable 248 million dollars mark, and the return of the Scary Movie parody franchise exceeded 173 million dollars globally.
