Could Jim Ryan be hinting at an Xbox Game Pass equivalent for PlayStation?

Sony saw its global launch of the PS5 yesterday as it finally hit homes to eager gamers awaiting their next-gen console. Although, some players’ hopes in the UK have been dashed due to many PS5’s going “missing” during delivery or they have been given items like an air fryer instead. Something that may cheer PlayStation owners up a bit is the hopes that an Xbox-like Game pass might become available at some stage to the console.

According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan in an interview with Russian news agency TASS, the subject arose on how Sony plans to respond to Microsoft’s Game Pass initiative. Ryan gave an answer, although a rather cryptic one, and said “There is actually news to come, but just not today. We have PlayStation Now which is our subscription service, and that is available in a number of markets.” At this time, we can’t be too sure what this could really mean for PlayStation but it does seem that maybe Ryan has had a change of heart which is in stark contrast to what he had said not too long ago when he stated that it “doesn’t make any sense” for the company’s PS5 plans in regards to an Xbox Game Pass equivalent.

When looking at Microsoft’s Game Pass, it’s been going from strength to strength and even becoming one of the key selling points for those wanting to pick up an Xbox Series S/X. From offering their exclusive games on PC day-and-date to offering Game Pass Ultimate for $1 for first-time subscribers to offering perks and streaming to mobile devices for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, it’s undoubtedly the best place for players looking to save a little money to start.

Elsewhere in the interview with TASS, Ryan was poised the question on whether there was a console war on with Microsoft. “[Console wars] is not a term I ever use or actually like. For me, it’s great that there’s competition. I think it makes us work harder. It avoids us getting complacent.” Ryan replies “It’s great that the consumer has a choice. I think that’s wonderful. We’re happy and we’re proud with what we have.”

The PS5 is available in countries everywhere as of yesterday but as expected, they are presently hard to come by. We hope you mention to pick yourself up one if you haven’t yet.
