Sony boss Jim Ryan has weighed in on the latest “console war” between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, stating that he doesn’t like the term and that “it’s great there’s competition”. Speaking with Russian outlet TASS, the executive explained that strong products from the Japanese giant’s competitors keeps the company on its toes – and helps it to avoid getting complacent.

“[Console wars] is not a term I ever use or actually like,” he said. “For me, it’s great that there’s competition. I think it makes us work harder. It avoids us getting complacent. It’s great that the consumer has a choice. I think that’s wonderful. We’re happy and we’re proud with what we have.”

It’s a good response from Ryan, and a reminder that a strong and vibrant games industry is better for all of us; the more players there are – regardless of platform – the better the software and services will be. In fact, the executive may have already teased upcoming initiatives driven by competition: speaking to the same media outlet he hinted PlayStation may have a response to Game Pass in the works.
