Sony updates conduct guidelines for customer service

Sony updates conduct guidelines for customer service

Protecting employees from verbal abuse and threats in the corporate environment is a fundamental duty of any reputable company. However, expanding rules to classify the persistence of disgruntled customers over business decisions as misconduct is an unfortunate choice that alienates the community and harms open dialogue. Sony and PlayStation have published an update on their official Japanese portal regarding harassment policies for staff, introducing broad terms that now categorize persistent or frequent customer complaints as inappropriate behavior subject to penalties.

This overhaul takes place amid public debates and legal actions concerning the gradual decline in physical media releases by the Japanese manufacturer.

In general terms, a code of conduct like this one is designed to protect the workforce from abuse, direct threats, insults, and moral harassment in customer service, situations where individuals hide behind the anonymity of the internet to launch personal attacks on support staff and developers.

However, Sony has chosen to detail specific situations that extend the concept of abusive behavior, setting strict precedents and allowing for police involvement in the cases mentioned in the publication:

Examples of customer harassment

Persistent and repeated, or prolonged demands

Unreasonable or excessive demands for compensation or apologies

Abusive language, threats, defamation and other similar behaviors.

Requests unrelated to products or services.

Intimidating behavior and coercion to force someone into submission.

Discriminatory or sexual conduct

Attacks and demands against individual employees

Visiting our offices or related facilities without permission and requesting meetings or assistance is prohibited.

*Examples of customer harassment are not limited to these.

The inclusion of the item prohibiting "persistent and repeated, or prolonged demands" raises uncertainty about how the company will handle legitimate protests by dissatisfied players over lack of support or changes in media format.

The loophole in the statement that the list "is not limited to these" makes judgment excessively subjective in favor of the brand.

While the intention to curb severe abuse online and in PlayStation's formal channels addresses a real need for corporate security, using this guideline to shield the management from continuous scrutiny by users consuming Sony products reflects an authoritative stance that turns justifiable criticism into a pretext for punishment.
