Ryu Ga Gotoku plans to expand Like a Dragon in 2026
A Ryu Ga Gotoku has established an aggressive technical schedule for the year 2026, consolidating its strategy of annual releases. With the title Yakuza Kiwami 3: Dark Ties scheduled for February 2026, the studio will reach the milestone of six games from the franchise released in six years. According to Masayoshi Yokoyama, leader of the production company, the next year will be marked by announcements and releases celebrating the brand's 20th anniversary. In a New Year's message published on December 31, 2025, the executive stated: "Trust me. Next year will be great," signaling that SEGA is preparing news beyond the projects already known.
Currently, Ryu Ga Gotoku's infrastructure is divided between the development of Yakuza Kiwami 3, Stranger Than Heaven, and the new Virtua Fighter. Maintaining this productive cadence is a positive point for SEGA's cash flow, demonstrating a rare operational efficiency in the AAA games industry. It is speculated that the "amazing" year mentioned by Yokoyama may include the revelation of Like a Dragon 9 or a new title in the Judgment series, keeping the franchise's visibility at high levels throughout the celebratory cycle.
On the other hand, the accelerated pace of releases is subject to severe criticism regarding the risk of saturation and formula fatigue. It is questionable whether delivering six games in six years allows for the technical refinement and necessary innovation for each entry. The frequent recycling of maps and assets, a common practice in the series, may start to generate disinterest among a player base seeking substantially new experiences. Furthermore, the reliance on vague promises like "trust me" in December 2025 without the presentation of concrete gameplay of new projects can be interpreted as a marketing strategy to mask the creative fatigue of the team.
