Rockstar fails in attempt to block charges in court
The British judiciary committee scheduled the start of sessions for September 10, anticipating the conclusion of proceedings on October 15. This decision to move forward with the case in its entirety is an unwelcome setback for the owner of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, which was doing everything possible to protect its reputation in the courts before the public gained access to the company's operational details.
The controversy erupted when Rockstar Games dismissed 34 professionals in the UK and Canada on the grounds of "serious misconduct" in October 2025. As the dismissed employees were part of the IWGB Game Workers union, the organization quickly accused the company of union persecution. The gaming giant defended itself by claiming that the group had leaked confidential data, but investigations by the channel People Make Games indicated that the alleged leak was just a private conversation among employees discussing internal Slack rules within a closed Discord server. Using any trivial dialogue as a pretext for mass dismissals signals an authoritarian and unreasonable stance by management.
A UK labor tribunal denied Rockstar's request to remove the "blacklist" allegations from the lawsuit filed by former employees. The practice of creating lists to label unionized workers or activists to harm their careers is one of the most controversial tactics in the corporate environment. The company rushed to try to suppress this specific allegation from the hearings, although the reasons for this appeal have not been officially disclosed. The case escalated to the point where the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, addressed the situation in Parliament, calling it "deeply concerning."
The union leadership also took a firm stance on the trial's progress. The president of the IWGB Game Workers, Spring McParlin-Jones, criticized the developer's defensive attitude: “The court refused to let Rockstar off the hook, finding that serious factual questions remain about how these workers were identified, listed, and dismissed—questions that must now be tested in a full hearing. From the moment employees were escorted out of their buildings without notice, and throughout each subsequent stage of legal proceedings, Rockstar has tried to avoid accountability—denying workers a fair hearing, failing to respond to basic evidence requests, and now trying to limit scrutiny of the allegations brought against them. Gamers worldwide have noticed these tactics, and now a court has also cast doubt on Rockstar's version of events.”
Formal developments began last November when the class entity filed the lawsuits. For those affected, maintaining the original complaints empowers them to take on one of the wealthiest entertainment brands.
“This trial is a huge moment for us,” expressed Ellie Dunstan, one of the professionals laid off last year. She added, criticizing the treatment received from the management: “Rockstar thought they could control the narrative. They are mistaken, and we are eager to prove it. Our case will now be fully heard and tested as it should be. The world will be able to see for itself the evidence of what happened last October. We loved our jobs at Rockstar. Losing our passion, our colleagues, and our incomes in the blink of an eye was devastating, and the company's management has treated us with contempt since, refusing to grant us appeals or respond to basic evidence requests. After months of fighting to have our voices heard, this is a moment to celebrate. The trial shows that even against a company with Rockstar's resources, workers can come together and demand accountability. This fight has always been about more than just our situation—it’s about ensuring that workers throughout the gaming industry and beyond have the right to unite, speak up, and organize for a fairer sector.”
