Rebounding Cyberpunk 2077 Sales Propel CD Projekt RED to Record Third Quarter
Choom boom
Credit where credit’s due: Cyberpunk 2077 is back. It’s been over two years since the game’s disastrous PS4 launch, but now running robustly on PS5 – and with a critically acclaimed anime to complement it – players are returning to Night City in their droves. In fact, the release’s resurgence has been so strong that Polish developer CD Projekt RED has enjoyed a record third quarter.
The game recently received a patch which boosted its already impressive new-gen visuals even further, and it added crossover content with Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners back in September. This propelled the release’s sales to extraordinary new levels, and according to CDPR it’s been attracting around one million concurrent players per day of late.
All of that, of course, means big money for the developer: “In terms of financials, this was the best third quarter in our entire history,” chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz explained. “With consolidated revenues at 246 million PLN (~$54.6m) – mostly owing to strong sales of Cyberpunk – the Group posted 99 million PLN (~$21.3m) in net profit.”
Cyberpunk 2077’s longevity is mirroring that of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has received enormous boosts from the TV show over the years, and is poised to receive its own major PS5 update next month. CDPR will be hoping it can maintain the momentum until next year’s Phantom Liberty expansion, with a full-length sequel also in development, too.
