PS5 Controller Unboxing Reveals Premium Product, Doesn't Work with PS4 Yet

A closer look.

PlayStation 5 has exploded into life today, with influencers and media in the United States receiving consoles earlier this morning. That’s been followed by an Austin Evans video, in which the tech YouTuber has unboxed a DualSense controller and done a bunch of tests with it. It’s a full 10 minute video, but to summarise he compares the size to the DualShock 4, connects the peripheral to a PS4 Pro, and even pulls it apart.

So, what did we learn? Well, the controller itself is fairly large – significantly bigger than the PS4’s pad by some margin. Evans notes that it has a grey hue in person, and that its analogue sticks generally feel quite loose compared to the Xbox Series X’s pad – although that’s true of the DualShock 4 as well. He explains that the buttons all feel very “premium”, and he’s particularly fond of the triggers, even without the adaptive motors enabled.

The PS4 Pro does detect the device, but it doesn’t currently work. This is something that a future firmware update could fix, so don’t rule out compatibility entirely just yet. He does manage to get the controller working, ironically enough, with Microsoft’s cloud streaming technology on an android smartphone. He then takes the pad apart – breaking it, of course – and shows some of the internals, including the adaptive trigger mechanics.

The takeaway? This is a very nice next-gen controller, which feels great in the hands. However, with features like haptic feedback currently being unavailable, there’s much more for us to learn about how this pad improves existing games. We can’t wait to give it a try for ourselves, but let us know what you think of the controller based on this video in the comments section below, and which titles you’re most looking forward to playing with it.
