The fighting game community eagerly awaits a new title in the Mortal Kombat series. Rumors indicated that the next game would be titled MK12, but a teaser recently released suggests that the series will undergo a revamp, indicating a possible reboot.
The teaser video doesn't reveal many details, but it shows a pointer stopped at the number 12 and another at the number 1, raising the possibility of a continuation of Mortal Kombat 11 with a story that dates back to the beginning of the franchise, which would be a reboot to some extent.
Since the release of Mortal Kombat, the series has focused heavily on its story, putting the player in the shoes of different characters, with fights between cutscenes. This is reflected in subsequent titles and even in the Injustice franchise games with DC heroes and villains, also developed by NetherRealm Studios.
The last title in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 11, was released four years ago and was highly acclaimed by critics. Despite user ratings being a little lower, the game had scores above 88 on Metacritic and 87% player approval on Steam.
While no additional details about the next game have been revealed, Ed Boon, one of the franchise's creators, had already announced in December 2022 that the new game would be released in 2023. Warner Bros. Games also confirmed the arrival of the new Mortal Kombat in a recent fiscal report.
As we await more official information, the expectations of the fan community only increase for the next chapter of the most iconic fighting series in games.
