Final Fantasy XVI is the next mainline entry in the Final Fantasy series that was officially revealed a few weeks earlier during Sony’s latest PS5 showcase.

New reports suggest that the game has been in development for a considerable time and will launch sooner than you may expect.

Jason Schreier, Bloomberg’s video game journalist who is been mostly known for his leaks on the upcoming projects of the various video game development studios around the world, recently appeared in the Triple Click podcast with some interesting unofficial information on Final Fantasy XVI.

According to Schreier, Square Enix has started the development process for Final Fantasy XVI nearly four years ago, meaning the game has already hit some significant milestones of development. Schreier also claimed that the game will launch sooner than expected.

We haven’t learned so much about the next Final Fantasy yet, but according to the reveal trailer the game is set in a medieval era, unlike Final Fantasy XV‘s modern setting. That said, the characters and story still need more clarification in the future.

Final Fantasy XV launched later in November 2016 and received mostly positive reviews from the critics, though some of the fans believe that the game’s story would be more compelling if its post-launch expansions were available at launch within the game.

Aside from Final Fantasy XVI, Square Enix is also committed to delivering the second part for Final Fantasy VII Remake, which hasn’t received any development update so far. It’s yet to be seen whether the second part will be the last one or there would be more in the future.

Final Fantasy XVI is set to be launched exclusively on PS5, despite the fact that the previous entry released for PS4 and Xbox One at the same time. There’s also a possibility that the game might launch on PC, regarding the fact that the game’s revealed trailer was running on a PC simulating PS5’s performance.
