The cancellation comes after confirmation of the absence of large companies such as Microsoft, Nintendo and Sega

Electronic Entertainment Expo 2023 (E3) was officially canceled this Thursday (30). The information was initially released by IGN, and later released by the organization of the event.

"ReedPop and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announce that both the digital and physical versions of the E3 2023 events are cancelled."

According to IGN, two sources confirmed that the statement sent by the ESA to members about the event's cancellation said that while it "remains a beloved event", E3 2023 "simply hasn't attracted the necessary interest to run it in a way that showcase the size, strength and impact of our industry.”

Organized by ReedPop and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), both the digital and physical event have been cancelled. E3 2023 would take place between June 13th and 16th at the Los Angeles Convention Center and would mark the in-person return of the event, which had its last physical edition in 2019.

The ESA also issued a public statement from Kyle Marsden-Kish, ReedPop's Global Vice President of Gaming:

"This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put in to make this event happen, but we had to do what's right for the industry and what's right for E3. We appreciate and understand that companies stakeholders would not have ready-made playable demos and that feature challenges made E3 in June a hurdle they couldn't overcome. of ReedPop Events".

The cancellation of the event comes after the announcement of large companies that would not be present at the event, including Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, Ubisoft and more recently, Sega and Tencent.

Some of the companies that would not be present at the event already have confirmed events. Microsoft is hosting an Xbox Games Showcase on June 11th, while Ubisoft is hosting its own event, Ubisoft Forward Live, on June 12th.

Rumors that E3 2023 would be canceled were already rolling

As we reported here this week, rumors that E3 2023 would be canceled were growing. Last Tuesday (28th), VGC journalist Andy Robinson said there was a possibility that the event would be cancelled, as he wasn't hearing good things about it. He added that he "wouldn't be surprised if the event was canceled this week".

And you, what did you think of this news? Are in-person and large events like E3 important? Or is it ideal to follow the wave of own events and, most of the time, online? Comment below.
