Don't Nod is seeking alternatives to prevent financial collapse

The situation has severely deteriorated at the offices of the French developer. At the beginning of June, independent auditors from Don't Nod issued a very concerning warning, indicating that the company's cash reserves could be completely depleted by November without new investments. The report revealed that management has been trying to find lines of credit and new partners for several months, without practical success. To further complicate the scenario, the Chinese giant Tencent has decided to close the funding tap and will inject no more money into the studio, although they remain a long-term shareholder. Relying on the goodwill of megacorporations to close the monthly accounts is a strategic mistake that many medium-sized companies continue to make.

Company representatives spoke with the portal Game Developer in an attempt to reassure investors and change the crisis narrative. According to the studio, the current focus is on optimizing the operational structure and lengthening the financial horizon through strict expense management.

“As disclosed in our latest financial report, the going concern statement is a standard accounting requirement and disclosure for companies listed under applicable reporting frameworks,” defended a brand spokesperson. They continued by arguing that the auditor's data does not reflect the complete picture: “It is based on the information available as of the report date and does not take into account the potential impact of various funding and cash preservation initiatives currently being pursued by the company. Don't Nod is focused on extending its cash horizon through a combination of financing initiatives, disciplined cash management, and an optimized operational structure, while continuing to adapt its cost base to market conditions.”

This formal justification seems like mere rhetorical gymnastics to mask management's inability to achieve recent commercial successes that would sustain operations. The studio confirmed that it is urgently seeking external financial support specifically to fund the production of the mysterious Project P14, along with promising a drastic reduction in its cost base.

The spokesperson concluded the matter in a procedural manner: “At this stage, we have no further comments to add beyond the information already disclosed in the company's last financial report.” It remains to be seen if these desperate cost-cutting measures will have an effect in time or if the creator of narrative adventures will end up overwhelmed by its debts before the year's end.
