Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Was Cut Because of Game's Troubled Launch, Admits CDPR

Even before Cyberpunk 2077 had actually released back in 2020, developer CD Projekt Red had confirmed that it was working on some kind of multiplayer Cyberpunk title. Whether it would end up being a standalone game or a 2077 expansion, we never really knew, but all talk of the project pretty much died out after the open world RPG launched.

And that's because the Polish studio pulled the plug on its multiplayer ambitions. Eurogamer reports that the planned multiplayer content was basically ditched following 2077's infamously troubled release. CDPR had little choice but to go all-in on improving its latest game, and that meant having to greatly adjust its priorities.

"The priority was that the main experience will run for the people in a really good state," senior quest designer Philipp Weber told Eurogamer. "Essentially, the switch of priorities meant that other R&D projects had to go away." In other words, there just wasn't time for multiplayer to really take flight.

It's mad to think that in an alternative timeline, if Cyberpunk 2077 had released with no issues, we could well be playing a multiplayer spinoff or expansion right now. But as it stands, CDPR had little choice but to right its wrongs — and, to be fair, it's done a good job so far, with 2077 being a dramatically improved experience on PS5.

Would you like to see Cyberpunk's multiplayer return at some point?
