Crunchyroll Ends Free Access; Catalog Becomes Exclusive

Crunchyroll has confirmed the end of the free ad-supported model on December 31, 2025. Starting on January 1, 2026, the platform will make all its anime catalog exclusive to subscribers of the paid plans.

This decision marks the end of the option that allowed users to consume a selection of older titles and seasons by watching ads. Although free access had already been limited in recent years — with new releases and weekly episodes restricted to premium subscribers —, this complete discontinuation is a significant move towards total monetization.

Users seeking free content are already being alerted about the service change, encouraging them to migrate to paid plans. It is clear that the platform aims to maximize revenue by pushing free viewers to become paying subscribers.

As Crunchyroll closes this access route, the anime streaming market becomes less accessible to casual viewers, focusing strictly on the fan base willing to pay. The transition solidifies the service as a full paywall.
