CMA allays concerns about Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has updated its preliminary findings on the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, stating that it no longer believes that competition in the console games market will be significantly reduced.

The CMA said it has received new evidence that refutes some of its initial concerns about the $69 billion acquisition. While the CMA had previously expressed concern about Microsoft making Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox, the CMA says the new information shows that such a strategy would result in significant losses in any plausible scenario.

CMA independent group chairman Martin Coleman said the merger would not lead to a significant reduction in competition in console gaming because the costs to Microsoft of not marketing Call of Duty on PlayStation would outweigh the gains that would result from such a move.

The CMA is still investigating concerns about the cloud gaming market and plans to conclude its investigation by the end of April.
