Capcom anticipates the premiere of Onimusha for early September.
Fans of classic action have an excellent reason to celebrate. The legendary samurai franchise from Capcom had been dormant in the company's archives for nearly two decades, now bearing the significant task of sustaining the successful release cycle of the Japanese developer. The brand has already sold around 9 million units over its history, and this triumphant return breathes new life into the market with a renowned intellectual property that was sorely missed on modern consoles, proving that the company still knows how to honor its golden past.
The new adventure goes by the name Onimusha: Way of the Sword and its official release date was adjusted on the calendar. Instead of vying for the public's attention in the crowded end of September, the publisher chose to bring the schedule forward.
The title hits the market on September 4, 2026, with confirmed versions for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series and PC. Releasing a ready product ahead of time instead of delaying it indefinitely is a commendable stance by the management, respecting the player's time and demonstrating full confidence in the technical polish delivered by the production team. Those eagerly awaiting the final product can already test the combat systems immediately via a free demo available in digital stores.
This time, the story whisks the player directly to the streets of Kyoto during the iconic Edo period. The central plot revolves around a dark fantasy where hordes of demonic creatures, the traditional Genma, plot to unleash chaos and take over the world. It's up to the player to wield blades and master counterattack mechanics to thwart the invasion of monstrosities. Bringing back this heavy atmosphere with the visual capabilities of the current generation is a huge win, rekindling the survival gameplay that made the franchise famous in the past while also integrating necessary modern updates.
